Ms. Turnbough

And Then...I Became a Teacher

First of all, I have 3 wonderful children...Hayley (13), Josh (11), and Drew (8). They keep me very busy! When I'm not teaching, I am driving them everywhere to their activities and sports! They have made me an engineer of logistics.

So let's see...I started my career in the business field after earning my B.S. in business administration at the University of Missouri--St. Louis where I also played on the Women's soccer and softball teams.

After about a year of working , I returned to college to enter into the field of elementary eductation, so I could work more and earn less. Actually, I went into teaching because I had always loved school and learning, and I wanted to make my heart happy (and have my summers off :) Seriously though, the intangibles of teaching can't be duplicated in very many other careers.

I was first hired by Fort Zumwalt to teach 6th grade communication arts (writing and grammar) at North Middle School.  Some teachers think middle schoolers are scary, but I loved my 6th graders (they don't actually get scary until 7th grade). I worked hard to earn my M.A. in Elementary Education while at NMS, and I enjoyed teaching there for five years, then decided to try my hand at the elementary level...where I truly wanted to be.

Now let's be perfectly clear, and honest...elementary...especially primary...is an entirely different animal than middle school as I found out first hand. It probably took a couple months to build up my stamina!  I remember after the first week of teaching 2nd grade I thought, "Oh God...what have I done?" I was exhausted! Thankfully, after some amazing support from my coworkers, and some good energy drinks, I started to settle in, and knew that 2nd grade is where I belonged...and that actually kindergartners are way scarier than middle schoolers could ever be, and those teachers should get a stipend, along with a guaranteed place in heaven. God bless them.

Sooooo....long story short....being hired at Westhoff Elementary was a successful career choice, and I have been going strong and loving life here in 2nd grade for 9 years. I am currently at a Masters +27 (meaning I have 27 graduate hours past my Masters degree). That's why I have the kids call me Master Turnbough.  Just kidding...they can just call me Master.

Wow...that is a lot about me!  I am very excited for what will come in my 15th year of teaching with my new class of Tadpoles. I always spend the summer finding new ideas to try.

So join the Turnbough Tadpoles and their fearless leader (me) in our 2nd grade adventure!
